Quantum Leaps Conference - Smithers

Smithers Secondary School

A conference for young women in Grades 10-12 to learn more about science and technology careers and to meet the women in the Bulkley Valley who are in those careers!

The Quantum Leaps Conference focuses on career development and highlights the importance of continuing science and technology courses in secondary and post secondary schools to ensure a wide range of career opportunities for female students in grades 10-12. This conference is for female high school students, high school counsellors and interested parents from the Bulkley Valley.

Our goals include:

  • To  demonstrate that courses in the field of science and technology are interesting, relevant and can open doors to interesting and well–paying careers for women
  • To expose female students to careers which they may never have realized exist or known that they require a math and science background
  • To encourage these young women to broaden their career possibilities through studying STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, and math)

Despite the fact that girls are on par with boys in math and science proficiency scores (Girls Inc, 2006) females continue to be under-represented in STEM careers (Statistics Canada, 2006).  This conference is not only for female students who excel in math and science studies and may be already committed to a scientific career but it is also geared towards students that may be considering dropping science and math as they do not see its importance and practical application in their future.
